Consumption of alcohol is decreasing in Sweden. This is shown by a new report from the Central Organisation for Alcohol and Drug Information, Can.

According to Can's compilation, the total consumption decreased by 2.2 percent in 2024 compared to 2023.

In 2024, the consumption of pure alcohol per inhabitant over 15 years was 8.4 liters on average – which is a decrease of 6.5 percent if you compare with the figures from 2019.

The sale of alcohol in Sweden also decreased in 2024, according to Can.

The registered sales – i.e. sales that take place via Systembolaget, restaurants and food stores – decreased by 0.8 percent in the past year compared to the year before. If you compare with 2019, Can sees an increase of 2.6 percent.

The unregistered consumption, which consists of the part of alcohol that is brought into the country in connection with travel, home production, purchase of smuggled alcohol and purchase via the internet, decreased by 10.9 percent in 2024 compared to 2023.

Over 440,000 people have participated in the measurements that began in 2000 and have been ongoing since then.
