Sweden is pushing within the EU for sanctions against those who, in various ways, played a role in the legal process that led to the execution. This includes barring them from entering the EU.
At the same time, Sweden is blocking short-term visas for diplomatic personnel from Iran, affecting two people at the Iranian embassy. No new such visas, which are valid for 100 days, will be granted, meaning the two will not receive extended residence permits from May.
"This is just the beginning. We are not ruling anything out going forward," says Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard (M), referring to possible further Swedish measures.
