Sweden Shines at World Championship with Two Golds and a Bronze

Two gold and one bronze. Sweden leaves Tokyo as one of the best nations. It was a completely incredible point on a fantastic World Championship for our national team, says national team captain Kajsa Bergqvist.

Rain poured down over Tokyo but there were still smiles on the Swedes who were on site in the Japanese capital.

Sunday's conclusion of the athletics championship became something very special. In the sixth and final throw in the discus final, Daniel Ståhl secured his third World Championship gold.

It's completely incredible, what he does, says Kajsa Bergqvist.

He danced into the ring and threw it away. It's Daniel, what an athlete.

"Everything else would have been crazy"

The national team captain's feelings fluctuated during the last day. From being involved in arguing that the discus final should continue – after the heavy rain that forced the organizer to stop the medal competition for two hours – to the conclusion with Ståhl's gold.

I'm glad the organizer made the only sensible decision, to carry out this discus final at the World Championship. Everything else would have been completely crazy, she says.

It can be like this. It can rain, the sun can shine, it can blow and it can be all kinds of weather but the World Championship is decided in the conditions that prevail. It's like "rules of the game".

Fifth in the medal table

With Ståhl's gold – along with Armand Duplantis' gold in pole vault and Andreas Almgren's bronze in 10,000 meters – Sweden climbed in the medal table and finished in fifth place.

I think everyone goes in and fights and everyone struggles to do their very best. It's not enough for everyone and that's how it is. Some leave here disappointed but everyone has been in and fought for it.

As a team, we're doing one of the best World Championships we've ever done.

What feeling do you leave Tokyo with?

I've gone through every feeling in my whole body, it feels like, says Kajsa Bergqvist.
