Sweden set men's handball scoring record with 50 goals in win over Luxembourg

It was slow going at first. Then things really took off for the Swedish men's national handball team, who won their European Championship qualifying match away against Luxembourg by a whopping 50–20 - a record goal tally for the men's national team.

Never before has the men's national team scored so many goals in an international match, according to the national handball team's website.

The previous record was 49 goals - scored against Australia in both 1999 and 2005. But Sweden broke that record with a little Christmas Eve away against Luxembourg.

“It will of course be special, but it's great that the guys were focused,” national team captain Michael Apelgren told SVT.

Luxembourg tied the game at 3–3, and the score was also 6–7. Sweden then shifted up a gear and led 26–10 at halftime.

Sweden began the European Championship qualifiers with a 33–24 win against Greece on Thursday. The qualifiers continue in March.

Sweden's next challenge, however, is the World Cup in Germany in January.
