57 percent more people searched for bookings in Sweden in July and August on the accommodation comparison site Trivago in the UK this year compared with last year. For Norway, the figure rose by 55 percent and for Denmark by 29 percent compared with last year, writes the Financial Times.

Booking company Booking has also seen an increase. In the three weeks leading up to the Fourth of July, searches for holidays in Norwegian and Swedish towns and cities increased by a third compared with last year in the UK.

The concept of coolcations is a widely used term that points to the trend of choosing cooler climates on holiday.

According to surveys from the European Travel Commission, a growing proportion of travellers say climate change is affecting their holidays, and 28 percent say they prefer cooler weather.

"Almost all travel trends right now speak for the Nordics. Many people want to go to places where there are not so many crowds and they want to get out of their sun loungers and onto their bikes. They want to do more things," says Visit Sweden CEO Susanne Andersson to Dagens Industri.
