More verdicts end with imprisonment and the sentenced prison term increases. This is shown by new statistics from the Crime Prevention Council (Brå) in a new report on law enforcement in Sweden 2024.

The largest increase is seen in prison sentences between two and six months, which increased by 12 percent in 2024 to the year before.

During the same period, the number of prison sentences of six months to two years increased by 9 percent, and prison sentences of 24 months or more increased by 11 percent.

The increase is due to more people being convicted of drug offenses and crimes against persons, according to Brå.

The sentence of closed youth care has also increased significantly. In 2024, 224 people were sentenced to closed youth care, compared to 119 people in 2023.
