About 1.05 billion mail items – approximately 983 million traditional letters and 66 million package letters – were distributed on the Swedish mail market last year.
This means a total decrease of 12 percent compared to 2023, according to PTS.
The decline earlier in the 2020s has been around 10 percent per year.
"As digitalization continues, traditional letters will play an increasingly smaller role as a means of communication for the vast majority of users in society, which has consequences for the economic conditions for distributing mail", says Emma Maraschin, head of the postal affairs unit, at PTS.
She notes that it is important to "find a balance between a service level that meets users' needs and the efficiency measures that postal operators need to take when parts of their revenue disappear".
Postnord dominates the Swedish mail market. The competition that exists is concentrated to major cities, but only Postnord is responsible for distributing traditional letters throughout the country.
In 2022, Postnord began distributing mail every other day to cut costs.
