Sweden Ready to Tackle Trump's EU Tariffs, Says PM Kristersson

Sweden is well prepared, says Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) since USA's President Donald Trump has given notice of, among other things, 20-percent tariffs on goods from the EU.

The Prime Minister emphasizes in a statement that it is the mutual cooperation through free trade that has contributed to peace, technological progress, and reduced poverty globally.

It is free enterprise and free competition that have laid the foundation for Western prosperity, says Kristersson in a video on the Government Offices' website.

Therefore, I deeply regret that the USA has taken a path where they want to restrict trade through increased tariffs. We do not want growing trade barriers. We do not want a trade war. It would make our populations poorer and the world more dangerous in the long run, he continues.

Kristersson says, however, that Sweden and the Swedish government are well-prepared with a stable economic foundation.

My hope and our goal is that we through negotiations will be able to limit the tariffs that the USA has now presented, he says and adds that Sweden will continue to stand up for free trade and international cooperation.

Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson (The Moderate Party) writes in a comment:

"The USA is moving forward with sharply increased tariffs against the EU. It will harm the European economy but also the American one. The EU countries will respond jointly. And Sweden, with public finances in world-class, has good conditions to protect the Swedish economy and Swedish consumers."
