Migration Minister Johan Forssell (M) hopes to bring about an amendment or reinterpretation of the 1951 UN Refugee Convention as early as this spring.
"We want it to be established that rape should always be a sufficiently serious crime for a person to be deported," Forssell said in connection with an EU meeting in Brussels.
He feels strong support both from the Nordic neighboring countries and from several colleagues in the EU.
"I have long been told that these conventions cannot be changed... but when I listen around the table, there are many who nod in agreement," Forssell said.
