The Swedish passport tops this year's ranking with 96.05 out of 100 points (Global Passport Report 2026), surpassing nations like Switzerland, Finland, Germany, and the Netherlands.

That puts Sweden ahead of countries such as Switzerland, Finland, Germany and the Netherlands.

For many Swedes, a passport is simply something you remember to bring before heading off on holiday. But globally, it represents much more than that. A passport can shape how freely a person is able to travel, work, study or build a life across borders — and the differences between countries remain striking.

According to the report, the gap between the world’s strongest and weakest passports is now almost 73 points. It has also widened every year since 2021, showing how uneven global mobility has become.

Sweden’s first-place ranking is not only about visa-free travel. The index also looks at areas such as quality of life, investment opportunities and wider global mobility. In that sense, a powerful passport reflects more than convenience at border control. It also points to political stability, international trust and strong institutions.

Smaller European countries continue to dominate the top of the list, with Nordic and Western European nations especially well represented. The report also shows that the most valuable passports do not always belong to the world’s largest economies or most powerful countries.

At the same time, travel is becoming more digital and more regulated. Electronic travel authorisations, pre-registration systems and automated border checks are becoming increasingly common. Even people with strong passports may find that travelling comes with more steps than before.

For Swedish citizens, however, the message is clear: the Swedish passport is one of the most powerful travel documents in the world. It offers access not only to more destinations, but to a level of freedom that many people still do not have.
