Sweden links aid to Somalia to reduce immigration

Somalia is expected to take back its citizens who lack a legal basis to remain in Sweden, and to counteract irregular migration to Sweden and to Europe from the outset, Minister of Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Benjamin Dousa (M) told Expressen.

The strategy for Sweden's development cooperation with Somalia covers the period 2026–2028 and includes SEK 630 million.

Now, aid and migration policies are being linked more closely. Somalia will, among other things, strengthen its institutions and democratic development, improve its ability to address climate change, and improve conditions to enable increased returns.
