Leo Borg played Sweden's first match – singles against Tunisia's number one Moez Echargui.
Borg, who is ranked 589 on the ATP ranking, could not stand up to Echargui, 175 in the world. The Swede lost in two straight sets with clear 1–6, 1–6.
We have played a lot at home in Tunisia and to come here (to Sweden) and play in front of an incredible audience was not easy, but I tried to keep myself calm, says Echargui in the post-match interview.
Olle Wallin was next in turn. The 410-ranked Swede was originally drawn against Ibrahim Snoussi, but the opponent was changed to Aziz Ouakaa who is ranked 625 in singles and 263 in doubles.
It initially seemed to be another convincing Tunisian victory, after Ouakaa won the first set with 6–2 and led the second set with 5–2. But then Wallin and the audience came to life, at the same time as Ouakaa completely collapsed.
Wallin equalized the second set to 5–5 and then won with 7–6 (7–3). In the third set, there was no question about it – Wallin won with 6–1 and won the match with 2–1 in sets in his Davis Cup debut.
It feels completely incredible, to make my debut here in Gothenburg has been the best moment in my life and in my tennis career, thank you so much, says Wallin after the match.
I just want to say thank you to everyone who has come here and supported, it has helped me a lot today.
The national team match continues on Saturday. Then Erik Grevelius and André Göransson will play doubles, and Wallin and Borg will play another singles match each.
Neither Mikael nor Elias Ymer is participating in the Davis Cup meeting. Mikael due to injury and Elias chose to decline.
