"The Commission considers that the efforts of the authorities so far have been insufficient," it said in a press release on Friday.
Bulgaria and Portugal are also being taken to court for ammonia emissions, while Latvia is in the same place due to emissions of nitrogen oxide and non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOC).
The process begins after an exchange of letters between the Commission and the countries that has been ongoing since 2023. In the first stage, fourteen countries were required to respond, then nine, before now choosing to move forward with the four mentioned above.
