Ambassador Hojatollah Faghani was summoned on Wednesday and informed that an official at the Iranian embassy will leave Sweden due to activities that are "not compatible with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations," the Government Offices wrote in a press release.

Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer says in a comment that Iran has for a long time been conducting security-threatening activities in and against Sweden. It has targeted opposition figures, as well as various Jewish and Israeli interests in Sweden, according to Strömmer.

"This has been done, among other things, by using criminal networks," he writes.

Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard takes Iran's operations seriously and says that the official is being expelled "to protect our citizens and other Swedish interests."
