The poor results in the World Championship qualification lead to the Swedish men's national football team plummeting eight places on the world ranking.

Sweden is now in 40th place, the largest drop on the top 100 list together with Greece.

Last week, Sweden lost to Switzerland with 0–2 and Kosovo with 0–1, both matches were played at home.

A month ago, it was only one point (against Slovenia) and a loss to Kosovo, which meant that Sweden dropped down to 32nd place in the world rankings – it was then the worst placement for the Swedish national team since 2017.

National team captain Jon Dahl Tomasson was fired on Tuesday and Sweden seems to have to hope for a play-off to reach the World Championship next year.

Sweden has been worse on the ranking, at worst it was in March 2015 when Sweden was ranked 45th in the world.

Spain still tops ahead of Argentina and France who have swapped places.
