Sweden Democrats Leaders Say Veil Ban Proposal Went Too Far and Cost Votes

The Sweden Democrats' proposal for a total veil ban went too far and cost the party votes, several party leaders now believe. The proposal lacked nuance, explanation and a basis for argument, says SD leader Tobias Andersson to SVT.

MP Andersson, who recently lost the key responsibility of chairing the business committee, believes the headscarf ban scared many young people away from voting for the SD.

I don't think there was a single district chairman who didn't think the veil debate was taking up too much of the focus, he tells SVT.

Party secretary Mattias Bäckström Johansson is also critical. In an interview with SR Ekot on Saturday, he agreed that the proposal for a total ban in public places went too far. Limiting the proposal to certain professions and young children would have been better, according to Bäckström Johansson.

It is my personal opinion that it perhaps misses the main goal a little because it is aimed at the youngest children, who may not be allowed to choose, he says in the interview.

Recently, SD veteran Björn Söder also criticized the proposal, which he claimed fueled the S and V parties’ “scare propaganda.”

I have a hard time understanding how it should even be enforced. Should we have morality police out on the street checking whether you show a certain number of centimeters of hair or not, Söder wondered in an interview with SvD.
