Sweden's handball masters received a royal visit on Thursday evening. In the opposing team, Spain, Pablo Urdangarin – nephew of the country's king – made his national team debut.

On Thursday evening, Sweden faced Spain in Linköping, and Pablo Urdangarin made his debut in the senior national team on the away team.

He entered the second half and scored two goals as Spain won 34–30.

But it's not for his handball that he is best known.

The 24-year-old is the grandson of the scandal-plagued former King Juan Carlos, nephew of the current King Felipe VI and son of Princess Cristina de Borbón, who was seen in the stands in Linköping.

Juan Carlos has been investigated on suspicion of tax fraud and bribery, and has been living in exile in the United Arab Emirates since 2020. His mother, Cristina de Borbón, has also been charged with crimes, but has been acquitted.

Even though it was only a friendly match, the meeting attracted great media interest in Spain.

"Since I was little, I have learned to live with that attention, as have my siblings. I remember how the cameras followed me when I left home," Pablo Urdangarin told Spanish newspaper El Mundo before the match.

Handball is in his blood. He is the son of Inaki Urdangarin, who played over 150 international matches for Spain and won Olympic bronze in both 1996 and 2000.

Corrected version: Now with the correct year for when Inaki Urdangarin won his second Olympic bronze.
