Sweden's squad for the European Championship in basketball is ready. Frida Eldebrink, Mathilda Ekh and Tilda Trygger are some of the names when the women's national team plays the premiere against Germany on Thursday. It is an exciting mix of experience and younger talents, says national team captain Robin Sandberg at a digital press conference.

In the 12-man squad, there are six players from the European Championship 2021, including Frida Eldebrink (who is doing her fifth European Championship and thus becomes the Swedish player with the most championships so far). Five players are therefore making their senior championship debut and among them, we find the star shot Tilda Trygger, who plays in North Carolina State University in the American league NCAA on a daily basis.

We have had a similar squad for a long time and it will be our biggest "edge", says Robin Sandberg. In comparison, Germany - where two players came in yesterday - we have had our squad for three weeks. It is a huge advantage for us.

”One of the keys”

In total, eight of the Swedes play in foreign clubs on a daily basis, another advantage, according to Sandberg.

We have much more experience of international play and it will be one of the keys. Likewise, we have gone a bit more for size in player selection at the same time as we are still mobile. It is a luxury as a coach to be able to choose a larger team without losing speed or tempo in the game.

Two names that are dropped from the squad are Sofia Persson and Tove Sabel. They are instead reserves.

We have chosen players who have been with us for a while, who know what we have done and what we want to do. There is a little less experience on Sofia and Tove.

Safe defensively

Are there any names that you will rely on particularly during the European Championship?

We have played a lot with Klara Lundquist and Frida Eldebrink from an offensive perspective, but the key is how we manage to involve more players and get more offensive threats. Defensively, we are safe and there everyone should be involved in defending.

Two star names are missing due to injuries: Elin Eldebrink and Regan Magarity.

We miss them, but I think we are in a good position. Especially in comparison to other nations where several players are also missing due to injuries and many - as said - come in late in the squad.

Sweden's matches in the group stage in Hamburg, Germany:

June 19: Germany-Sweden (20.00)

June 20: Sweden-Great Britain (17.15)

June 22: Sweden-Spain (15.15)

The first and second in the group advance to the quarterfinals.
