Ukraine will have a significantly stronger air defense thanks to the Gripen aircraft. It will have a much greater range and will be better able to deal with glide bombs, Jonson tells Dagens Nyheter.
According to manufacturer Saab, the deal is worth SEK 24.6 billion, the company writes in a press release.
The Minister of Defence describes Tuesday's agreement, which is also confirmed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on X, as a first step towards "Ukraine's ambition to acquire 150 Gripen" in the coming years.
Earlier this year, Sweden announced that, in addition to the planes being sold, it will also donate 16 older-model Gripen aircraft to Kyiv.
