The call is made in a joint letter to the European Commission and comes after last week's announcement from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that Russian athletes will be allowed to participate in the Olympics regardless of political stance.

"Russia is still waging a brutal war of aggression against Ukraine. The EU's funding programmes and cooperation cannot then be designed in a way that risks normalising Russian aggression. We must stand up for Ukraine's freedom and for the values on which the European community is based," says Minister for Social Affairs Jakob Forssmed (KD) in a press release.

The letter urges EU Commissioner Glenn Micallef to "review whether sports organisations that do not support EU values should be able to participate in EU funding, for example through Erasmus+," the government writes.
