A point against Japan in the final group match was enough for Sweden to become one of the eight best third-placed teams in the group. This gives Graham Potter's national team three possible places in the first knockout round. Which other third-placed teams advance will determine where the match is played.
Here are the options:
The most likely option is that Sweden will play in New Jersey. The Athletic reports an 84.1 percent chance that this will happen.
Sweden's goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterström said after the 1-1 draw with Japan that it will be tough regardless of the opposition.
"I have to give the boring answer that in a World Cup, sooner or later you will face very skilled nations. Regardless of who it is, I know we will be well prepared and put in the work necessary to make it as good as possible for us," he said.
If the match between Paraguay and Australia ends in a draw, the match against Germany in Boston will no longer be an option. In that case, there is a strong indication that either Norway or France will be Sweden's opposition in the round of 16. The Athletic puts that probability at 98.6 percent.
The last group stage matches will be completed around 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, local time in Sweden.
