Sweden Activates Electricity Price Protection in Southern Region After October Prices Exceed Threshold

High-cost protection for electricity area 4 has been activated, the government announces in a press release.

This year, the government has budgeted for high-cost protection if prices in an electricity price area average more than SEK 1.50/kWh over a calendar month.

"The monthly average spot price in electricity area four exceeds that limit in October. Therefore, high-cost protection for electricity area four is now being activated," the government writes in a press release.

"Sweden's energy supply is stable. However, high gas prices in Europe in recent days and an unsettled external situation are pushing up electricity prices, especially in southern Sweden," Energy and Enterprise Minister Ebba Busch writes on X.

Busch emphasizes that the amounts will likely be small, as consumption in southern Sweden is generally low in October compared with the winter months.

"Should prices remain high in November and December, support may be relevant then as well. The government will provide more information next week," she writes.

Last winter, a temporary electricity and gas subsidy was paid for January and February to compensate for high energy costs caused by a cold winter and the uncertain global situation.

The government needs to decide on new subsidy regulations to introduce an electricity subsidy.
