The human rights organization points to the so-called teenage expulsions, where young people have been deported alone from Sweden. An investigation by Aftonbladet found 92 cases, many involving young women who grew up in Sweden and still have family here.

It is particularly troubling when they are sent to countries where it is well documented that women are discriminated against and their rights are curtailed, HRW believes. This includes arch-conservative countries such as Iran and Afghanistan.

“The Swedish government is sending young women into situations where they may have to give up their rights and independence just to survive,” HRW's Susanne Bergsten is quoted as saying in a press release.
