Kohalmi was 0.95 seconds ahead of Olympic canoeist Andersson at the finish. The Swede, in turn, beat bronze medalist Lucrezia Zironi of Italy by two seconds.
Andersson paddled earlier on Saturday in a blue-and-yellow K4 crew with Moa Wikberg, Julia Lagerstam and Ella Richter; the crew finished ninth in the 500-meter Olympic distance.
On Sunday, Melina Andersson has another chance at a medal when the K1 5,000 meters will be decided in Montemor-o-Velho. The Swede has won the distance twice this World Cup season, the Swedish Canoe Federation writes in a press release.
