When the freestyle was decided on Sunday, Malmström, who rides in the Grade V class in para-dressage, came out on top. She had previously been fourth in the individual class.
The World Cup gold is Lena Malmström's first championship medal in her career. Afterwards, the Swede was in tears.
My son wanted a medal, it's his birthday today. It means a lot, the gold medallist tells Radiosporten and continues:
I am so very grateful.
The pair received 79.675 percent from the judges, while the silver went to Germany's Regine Mispelkamp and Britney de Jong of the Netherlands took the bronze.
Malmström's gold is Sweden's only medal at the World Equestrian Championships.
"Someone was going to do it," she tells SVT.
