Reigning Olympic champion Mohammad Hadi Saravi of Iran proved too strong. The Iranian won the bronze medal match 3–0.
31-year-old Alex Kessidis – who earlier in his career won World Championship silver and European Championship bronze in the 77-kilogram class, as well as World Championship bronze in the 87-kilogram class – reached the medal match with a 6–0 win over Turkey's Ibrahim Tigci in the repechage. The Swede ended up there after losing in the quarterfinals to Russian Artur Sargsian, who reached the final but lost.
