Swedavia scraps plans for new pier at Arlanda Airport after analysis of future needs

Swedavia is scrapping plans to expand Arlanda Airport with a new pier. The Stockholm Chamber of Commerce says the announcement was necessary.

According to Swedavia CEO Mats Johannesson, the decision was based on a “careful analysis.”

“There is a lot of evidence to suggest continued long-term growth in air travel. At the same time, we believe that passenger behaviour and airlines’ needs over the next ten years mean we should prioritise measures other than the kind of infrastructure capacity increase that a new pier would entail,” he says in the press release.

Last week, Swedavia announced that airlines offering frequent connections between Arlanda and smaller airports would receive discounts on take-off and passenger charges.

We see this as a positive announcement alongside the other measures being taken. It should be seen as a package, says Carl Bergkvist, head of business policy at the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce.

“Disastrously bad”

According to Bergkvist, it is good that “every stone is being turned over” to ensure that Arlanda gets more direct routes and lower costs.

Things have been disastrous for Arlanda in recent decades. We have lost many direct routes, and this is a big problem, says Carl Bergkvist, head of business policy at the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce.

The decision means that Swedavia is forced to write down the value of its assets by 1.2 billion kronor, the state-owned company says in a press release.

The write-down will negatively affect the result in the fourth quarter of this year, but will not affect cash flow or lead to any adjusted take-off or passenger charges in 2027, according to Swedavia.
