For three years, users have been able to log in to the streaming service voluntarily, but SVT will soon require mobile users to log in. Login requirements will then be introduced for those watching on a computer or web TV, as TV-Nyheterna first reported.
We do not believe that SVT Play will be good enough for the entire audience without logged-in users. This is the same assessment made by several other public service broadcasters, such as DR in Denmark, Yle in Finland and the BBC in the UK, says Hanna Dowling, SVT's head of communications, to Dagens Media.
The introduction is taking place gradually, but there is no date yet for when logging in to the mobile app will become mandatory.
