In May last year, the 38-year-old man stabbed his girlfriend to death in his home in Skultuna in Västerås municipality. He then went to his ex-wife's home in Rönnby and tried to murder her in front of their three children. The ex-wife survived.
The prosecutor appealed and requested that the man be sentenced to prison instead of being ordered to psychiatric care.
The Court of Appeal found that despite a serious mental disorder the man had some insight into his actions, that he armed himself and acted deliberately and purposefully, and that he stopped the attempted murder when the children intervened. Since his need for care is not considered to be great, he can be sentenced to prison.
