According to sources, the Bangkok-based company Obon is suspected of having acted as an intermediary for deals in which AI servers from Super Micro Computer, using advanced chips from Nvidia, were smuggled to, among others, China's Alibaba Group Holding.
In total, Obon is said to have purchased AI servers for $2.5 billion, some of which were reportedly sold on to Alibaba.
The suspicious deals could be the largest violation of US regulations on exports of Nvidia chips to China since the restrictions were introduced in 2022.
Alibaba denies any involvement in the suspected scheme.
