The man has been taken to hospital after being released from custody. This was on the advice of his employer, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, says the suspect's lawyer Anton Strand to TT.

He is not feeling well. Three days in police custody would make anyone feel bad. Moreover, he has sustained injuries. For this reason, he has filed a complaint about assault and misconduct against the police officers.

Was he also receiving medical care while in custody?

He has had contact with healthcare during his detention and the police have documented the injuries.

"Shouting in a foreign language"

It was on Sunday that the police raided the suspect's residence in Stockholm. His lawyer claims that there are several circumstances surrounding the arrest.

Besides breaking both the door and the apartment door, they did not identify themselves, he explains. They shouted in a language other than Swedish, which made him believe it was a robbery or something else. Not until he was sitting in a car did he find out that they were police officers. Despite being in civilian clothes and some wearing masks, says Anton Strand.

The day after, the Security Service informed that everything had gone smoothly, which is worrying for several reasons. It is important that correct information is given to the public when Swedish diplomats are arrested in their homes.

It was on Wednesday morning that it became clear that the man would be released.

"I have made the assessment that there is no longer reason to detain the person. The preliminary investigation will now continue without the person being detained," says Chief Prosecutor Per Lindqvist at the National Security Unit in a press release.

Not dismissed

At the same time, the suspicions have not been dismissed and the preliminary investigation continues.

But this kind of inquiry takes more time and is more thorough than it would be possible to dismiss the suspicions after such a short time, says Anton Strand.

The person is, according to several media outlets, a Swedish diplomat who has held senior positions.

According to information to SVT, the Security Service is investigating a possible connection between the spy suspect and diplomat Tobias Thyberg, who resigned just hours after being appointed as the new national security adviser. This is since sexual images of Thyberg were sent to the Government Offices.

TT has sought the prosecutor. The Security Service declines to comment on the case.
