Military forces used specialized equipment to detect and shoot down the unregistered drone near South Korea's training facility, a Mexican official told the AP.

It is still unclear whether the drone was used to spy on the South Koreans ahead of Friday's match, but South Korea's national team captain, Hong Myung-bo, downplayed the incident's impact on the team.

Luckily, it happened just before we started tactical training, so it didn't affect us, he says.

South Korea will face host nation Mexico at 3:00 a.m. on Friday, local time in Sweden.
