The man has been taken to hospital after being released from arrest. This following advice from his employer the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, says the suspect's lawyer Anton Strand to TT.

He is not feeling well. Three days in police custody would make anyone feel bad. Moreover, he has sustained injuries to his body. For this reason, he has filed a complaint of assault and misconduct against the police.

Did he receive care even in custody?

He has had contact with healthcare during the time in custody and the police have taken up the complaint and documented them.

"Shouting in another language"

It was on Sunday that the police raided the suspect's residence in Stockholm. His lawyer claims that there are several "strange circumstances" surrounding the arrest.

Besides breaking both the front door and the apartment door, they did not identify themselves as police, he says. They shouted in a language other than Swedish, which made him believe it was a robbery or something else. Not until he sat in a car did he find out that they were police. Despite being in civilian clothes and some wearing masks, says Anton Strand.

The day after, the Security Service informed that everything had gone smoothly, which is worrying for several reasons. It is important that correct information is given to the public when Swedish diplomats are arrested in their homes.

It was on Wednesday morning that it became clear that the man would be released.

"I have made the assessment that there is no longer reason for the person to be detained. The preliminary investigation continues now without the person being in custody", says chief prosecutor Per Lindqvist at the National Unit for Security Cases in a press release.

Not dismissed

The suspicions are thus not dismissed. The man is still reasonably suspected, the lower degree of suspicion, for espionage.

But this kind of investigation takes longer time and is more thorough than it would be possible for the suspicions to be dismissed after such a short time, says Anton Strand.

According to information to SVT, the Security Service is investigating a possible connection between the espionage suspect and Tobias Thyberg, who resigned just hours after being appointed as the new national security adviser. This after sexual images of Thyberg were sent to the Government Offices.

TT has sought the prosecutor. The Security Service declines to comment on the matter.
