"The preliminary investigation is at an early stage. At this point, the investigation points to the suspect having been linked to Russian intelligence. Whether this is the case will be determined by the ongoing process," says senior prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist in a press release.
The man, who is in his mid-30s, was arrested on Monday and remanded in custody on Wednesday, suspected of crimes committed between 2025 and 2026. He denies the charges. Prosecutors previously stated that the espionage is suspected to have taken place since 2022.
The suspect was employed as an IT consultant at the Armed Forces from 2018 to 2022, through a consulting company, the defense has confirmed.
