The incident occurred in the Andersberg district of Gävle at around 16.45 on Wednesday. Local media report that several witnesses claim to have heard gunfire.
The police confirmed that a serious violent crime had taken place, but were otherwise tight-lipped.
In the evening, the police wrote on their website that the shot man was found dead at the scene.
A large area with several residential buildings was cordoned off in the district, where police helicopters hovered and dog patrols were deployed. Several witnesses were questioned.
An investigation into suspected murder has been initiated, and several people have been detained on suspicion of involvement in the murder, according to the police.
