"I can confirm that a suspected rape occurred in an inpatient ward on Monday," Tomas Almroth, acting director of operations for psychiatry, told SVT Västernorrland.
Region Västernorrland confirmed that "a serious incident has occurred at one of our psychiatric inpatient wards in Sundsvall."
The suspect denies the crime, his lawyer said, according to TV4 Nyheterna.
