The attack on civilians in Ituri province reportedly took place on Sunday night, but was only confirmed on Monday by security sources. The ADF carried out attacks on several smaller towns. Many of the victims were killed with machetes after they were captured and tied up.
All the victims were farmers working in the fields, local leader Leon Undemutau Manzaleke told the AFP news agency.
The ADF movement originated in neighboring Uganda and has claimed to be affiliated with the terrorist group IS since 2019. The ADF has repeatedly carried out deadly raids against civilians in the region, despite being fought by the militaries of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
