The police's national bomb squad was alerted to the scene when the object was deemed sharp and hazardous.
- It was an undetonated hand grenade, says Björn Wessman, duty officer at the police.
A large area was cordoned off and approximately between 50 and 100 people, possibly more, had to be evacuated from their homes before the hand grenade could be neutralized. Evacuees were referred to an assembly center, where the municipality's crisis support was also on site.
It is of course something very upsetting and there is some concern when something like this happens, says the police's press spokesperson Olle Älveroth.
The police have initiated a preliminary investigation into attempted severe public endangerment. No person has been arrested in connection with the incident.
The alarm came in at 17.30 on Friday.
