The alarm about the bag, which was found outdoors by a member of the public, came in just before 5 p.m. on Tuesday. Just over an hour later, the police announced that the operation was being called off because the object was deemed harmless.
"It's just a precautionary measure until we know what the object is. This is a central location in Uppsala, where a lot of people are moving around at this time of day," police spokesman Stefan Larsson said during the operation.
