"It is in line with expectations. This is not a crime for which you would normally be deprived of your liberty," says the driver's defense attorney, Torgny Dahlberg, about the release.

The accident occurred between Växjö and Alvesta on Monday afternoon when a double-decker bus carrying around 40 people overturned on Highway 25. A young man died and many people were injured.

There are terrible consequences to this, and he is very aware of that, says Torgny Dahlberg.

The driver, who is in his 60s, was arrested on suspicion of causing death, causing bodily harm and reckless driving. He denies the charges, but the suspicions remain.

Prosecutor Tommy Sköld writes in an email to TT that police and prosecutors still do not know why the accident occurred.

He also says that, according to the test results, the driver was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Surveillance cameras on the bus show that it did not hit any guardrail, the prosecutor tells Smålandsposten.

There are movements on the bus between the lanes, but I don't want to go into any more detail," he tells the newspaper.

None of the patients being treated in hospital after the accident are in critical condition, Region Kronoberg (regional health authority) writes.

On Friday, Länstrafiken Kronoberg (regional public transport authority) will hold a minute's silence in memory of those affected by the fatal accident. At 1 p.m., city and regional buses, as well as vehicles used for service trips, will stop, provided it can be done safely.
