Two more people were injured in the incident, but their injuries are not considered life-threatening.
The police were first alerted to a suspected serious crime at 8:20 p.m. on Tuesday and began searching for a suspicious car. The car was found in the Nynäshamn area shortly before 10 p.m., after which the police began a pursuit.
Shortly afterwards, the pursued car drove into a road barrier and a police officer was then "forced to fire in response," the authority writes.
A report has been filed with the Department of Special Investigations after the police fired their service weapon.
