The man, who has denied any involvement in the Madeleine McCann case, has served his sentence for an unrelated sexual offense. Two years before Madeleine McCann disappeared, the man raped a 72-year-old American in the same Portuguese tourist area.
He is pointed out as the main suspect in the Madeleine McCann case by the police in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Portugal. He has never been prosecuted for any crime linked to the disappearance. German chief prosecutor Christian Wolters has previously warned of the risk that the man leaves the country.
The suspected man will wear an electronic ankle monitor and have his passport revoked. He must also notify the German police of where he resides, writes Der Spiegel.
It is an attempt by the authorities to keep him in a form of investigative custody, where they have access to him all the time, says the man's lawyer Philipp Marquort to the magazine.
Madeleine McCann, then three years old, disappeared in Portugal in 2007.
