Survivors of the deadly Typhoon Rai that hit the Philippines in 2021 are suing oil giant Shell, seeking financial compensation for climate-related destruction, three organizations, including Greenpeace, said.

The lawsuit is being filed on behalf of 103 survivors. According to the lawsuit, Shell's carbon emissions have contributed to climate change, which has affected Filipino communities.

Scientists have long warned that typhoons are strengthening more rapidly as the world warms due to human-caused climate change.

Typhoon Rai hit the southern and central parts of the Philippines in mid-December 2021. More than 400 people lost their lives and hundreds of thousands were left homeless.

The lawsuit has been filed in the United Kingdom.

A Shell spokesperson calls it “a baseless claim” that “will not contribute to addressing climate change or reducing emissions.”
