Survey finds declining confidence in Sweden’s electoral system

Over the past year, Swedes’ confidence in the fairness of general elections has fallen, according to a survey conducted by Indikator Opinion on behalf of Ekot.

According to the survey, 69 percent have a fair or very high level of confidence that the elections are being conducted correctly. This compares with 77 percent when Indikator conducted the same survey on behalf of the SOM Institute in 2025.

“What happened in Borlänge is probably what is driving the biggest decline here. But we also had problems with early voting during the election itself, and that may have played a role too,” says Henrik Ekengren Oscarsson, professor of political science at the University of Gothenburg, to Ekot.
