On behalf of the government, WVS has investigated values and social norms in Sweden, with a particular focus on foreign-born people.
"One in five migrants who have lived in Sweden for more than 20 years states that he or she has never worked. In vulnerable areas, this applies to nearly one in three migrants. These are two of several results that show that time in the country does not in itself lead to integration," writes Puranen.
Language studies in Swedish for Immigrants (SFI) need to be supplemented so that integration - also in terms of values - will be better, she believes.
"Therefore, language studies within SFI should be combined to a significantly greater extent with concrete social orientation on working life, gender equality, children's rights, relationships, religious freedom and the individual's legal status."
Several of those interviewed in the survey in areas of exclusion express concern that their children meet too few Swedish-born people and gain too little knowledge about society.
"It is not enough for people to live in Sweden if their everyday lives for decades largely take place outside the surrounding society. Workplaces, schools and residential areas are therefore central integration arenas," writes Puranen.
The survey will be presented to Minister of Education and Integration Simona Mohamsson (L) on Friday.
The global research project World Values Survey (WVS) has measured values and social norms in hundreds of countries since 1981.
Migrants have long been underrepresented and in 2019 the Migrant World Values Survey (MWVS) was presented for the first time, in which over 6,500 non-European migrants participated in Sweden through interviews and surveys.
The second report is now being released, in which 7,354 people in Sweden participated in the study, of which 5,720 were migrants. The study also includes re-interviews with migrants who were interviewed for the 2019 study.
