After the last game of the season (2–1 against Columbus), and the last game on his current contract, Alexander Ovechkin says he will talk to the team's coach and general manager, and his family.

Then we can take it from there.

I hope it's not my last game. But I don't know exactly what will happen.

The Russian has played 1,573 games in the NHL regular season so far, scoring 927 goals and 758 assists. He is the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer.

Ovechkin is the fifth player 40 years of age or older to play all 82 regular season games in a season. Another is Nicklas Lidström.
