What caused the leak is unclear, but according to the fire department, the entire tank has been emptied, the newspaper reports.

Drones were reportedly used to assess the leak, which spread into the sugar mill's stormwater system. According to Joel Johansson, duty officer at the emergency services, it involved a large amount of acid.

Sulfuric acid is highly corrosive, but Johansson tells Sydsvenskan that the personnel on site were checked by ambulance staff.

They checked them to make sure they hadn't inhaled fumes, but they are not currently affected.
