Sudan's army says that together with allied groups, they have "liberated" Wad Madani, the capital of the al-Jazira province (sometimes spelled Gezira).
The city has been controlled by the paramilitary force Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for over a year. Government forces, on the other hand, have recently retaken large parts of al-Jazira.
The fighting in Sudan broke out in April 2023 and is between arch-rivals General Abd al-Fattah al-Burhan and his former deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo (often called "Hemedti"), who is the leader of the militia Rapid Support Forces, RSF.
Both parties have repeatedly been accused of war crimes.
