Sudan Army Clears Rebels from Khartoum Capital Area

Sudan's army has completely driven out the rebels in the paramilitary RSF from the country's capital area, the military reports. "The state of Khartoum is completely free from rebels," says spokesperson Nabil Abdallah in a statement.

The announcement comes after the Sudanese military announced earlier on Tuesday that it had launched a "comprehensive offensive" against the remaining rebels in Khartoum and that fighting had been going on in the outskirts of the capital in recent days.

Explosions were heard, among other things, in Omdurman, where RSF had some of its last strongholds since the rebel group lost control of Khartoum two months ago.

Has stepped up

The Sudanese regular army has been fighting against RSF since April. The rebels, who have declared their own political rule along with allied groups, have their stronghold in the vast Darfur region in western Sudan.

RSF has since March stepped up drone and artillery attacks on several parts of the country.

In parallel, a political development is taking place. General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, leader of Sudan's military government, appointed former UN official Kamil Idris as prime minister. At the same time, the influence of the military-led council over the government has decreased. It is seen by analysts as an attempt to present a functioning civilian-led government in the midst of the ongoing war.

Welcomes the appointment

Both the Arab League and the African Union, which have excluded Sudan, welcome the appointment. The Union sees it as "a step forward" to "restore constitutional order and democratic governance".

The war broke out as a result of a split in the leadership of a military junta that took power in Sudan after the long-time dictator Omar al-Bashir was overthrown. The country is essentially divided between the warring parties. Tens of thousands have been killed and up to 14 million people have been displaced within and outside the country.
