The number of dead and wounded in the nearly four-year Russian war in Ukraine is around 1.8 million, according to a new estimate. The estimate says that on the Russian side, nearly 1.2 million soldiers have been killed or wounded.

Data on how many soldiers have been killed in the war are difficult to determine. Both sides are cautious about releasing statistics, with Russia consistently believed to be significantly understating its casualties.

A new study by the Center for Strategic and International Studies think tank in Washington calculates this, citing American and British estimates.

The high number of dead and wounded shows how Russia's invasion demands great sacrifices without achieving major territorial gains, writes The New York Times.
